My daughter is in the middle of a legal name change. She has gotten a legal decree to change her name, but has not filed paperwork with Social Security office yet. She uses her "new" legal name at her university and that "new"name appears on her 1098T.
Under my dependents I think I need to list her old name as that is still officially linked to her SSN. But then the "dependent" name and student name on 1098 will not match.
What do I do? Keep as different names in two place? Will the 529 withdrawals be considered unauthorized? Or do I list her new name as my dependent (SSN has not changed)?

Q. Does it matter that the 1098T does not have a SSN on it? Just the student name ("new" name).
A. No, although that is unusual. TurboTax will use the SS# from the dependent personal info entries for the IRS forms.
Use the name on record with with the social Security Administration on your tax return. If the name is different on the 1098-T, that's OK, as long as it has the correct Social Security Number. If you change her name on your tax return, it will be rejected and an you will have to print and mail, or change the name back to what matches SSA.
Confirming the other answer/reply, you do not need to be concerned with a different name on the 1098-T.
Thank you! Does it matter that the 1098T does not have a SSN on it? Just the student name ("new" name).
Thanks!!
