Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

When I get to the "education & expenses" section, it lists my tuition as $0 and says that this amount was entered earlier. Where can I put on my tuition costs from my 1098-T?

I wasn't prompted to enter this before.

Use the following steps to go directly to the section of your return where you will be able to enter the information from your Form 1098-T and other education expenses.

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link

There is some sort of technical issue with the “0” for education because I’m getting the same thing. Turbo tax does not allow to change that education expense as it is “0”. When really a number should be placed instead of. If this does not get resolved I will be going to H&R Block

Since TurboTax has some of your data from the prior year, it is treating it as an item to edit, which will appear at the end of this section.  The best way to get this year's data into the program is to edit it following these steps:

  1. Login toTurboTax.com.
  2. Click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
  3. If prompted, click on Continue where I left off or Take me to my return.
  4. Choose Deductions and Credits from the top of the screen (for some users this may be in the center).
  5. Expand the Education section.
  6. Click on Start (or Revisit).
  7. Proceed through the entire education section answering all of the additional questions - you will go through about 8-10 additional screens and then you should reach a summary page.
  8. On the Education Summary screen at the end of the section, click Edit/Delete.
  9. Edit your entries.

If you still cannot edit or you cannot get to the Education Summary screen try these steps to reset the section:

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the menu on the left of the screen.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. When the Tools Center opens, click Delete a form.
  4. Scroll down the list of forms and click delete beside Form 1098-T.
  5. Confirm on the next screen by clicking Delete Form.
  6. Scroll down the list of forms again and click Delete beside Education Tuition and Fees Summary.
  7. Again, confirm on the next screen by clicking Delete Form.

This should clear the section out entirely and let you start fresh.
