You can qualify for the credit, yes. However, you cannot take a credit (or any other tax credit) if the GI Bill paid 100% of the costs or you were reimbursed for the costs. In other words, you can only take a credit for amounts you paid for out of your own pocket.
Q. Are you able to qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit even if tuition is covered by the Wisconsin GI Bill?
A. No. You may not claim a credit when the expenses were paid by tax free assistance, including GI Bill, employer assistance and some scholarships.
In some cases, you are allowed to declared some of your scholarship taxable, so that you can claim a credit. That option is not available for GI Bill, employer assistance or tuition waivers (which is what the WI GI bill is).
