Are student loans considered College and University expenses?

No, student loans are not automatically qualified education expenses.

However, when you use student loans to pay for tuition and related expenses, these expenses are education expenses which you can use to claim education credits such as the American Opportunity tax credit or the Lifetime learning tax credit.
