HI,
This is the 3rd year I apply AMERCIAN OPPORTUNITY CREDIT. Everything is almost same as last 2 years. But TURBOTAX told me "YOU CAN'T CLAIM AN EDUCATION TAX BREAK. HERE IS WHY YOU MAY NOT QUALIFY:
1.YOUR SPOUSE WAS A NONRESIDENT ALIEN WHO DID NOT ELECT TO BE TREATED AS A RESIDENT ALIEN.
(I and my child are resident same as last 2 years.so I think it is not a reason.)
2,SOMEBODY ELSE CAN CLAIM YOU AS A DEPENDENT ON THEIR RETURN.
(I selected "NO ONE ELSE WILL CLAIM ME AS A DEPENT ON THEIR RETURN" same as last 2 years. It's not a reason)
3.THERE WERE NO NET QUALIFIED EDUCATION EXPENSES.
(I input 1099-T box 1 ,same as last 2 years)
I wonder why this year I can't claim this credit.Could you kindly help me to claim this credit?
thank you!
Emily

Yes, it sounds like you should get the credit.
Please go through the Education Interview again and check your answers.
Make sure you answered that you were still in the first four years of the degree.
Look at your 1040 and make sure you are not listed as a dependent. Look for Form 8863 as well to see how the expenses are recorded.
For TurboTax Desktop, switch to Forms (top right)
To clarify,
What numbers are in Box 1 and Box 5 on the 1098-T?
box 1~57212.50
box 5~0

You are not allowed the credit if your filing status is Married Filing Separately (MFS).
I INPUT "HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD"
If you were under 24, on 12-31-23, TT will generate a question about more than half you support coming from your own earned income.
Thanks for your help! I will try again and go through the FORMs.
