My son was required to pay his 2018 study abroad tuition in 2017. He took a 2017 529 distribution to pay for it. How do I enter this qualified education expense?

With no place to enter this tuition expense (there is no 1098T) he is responsible for taxes and penalties on the earnings portion of the distribution.

Note: this program he is enrolled in is not an official study abroad program for his university, but the credits he earns while abroad will transfer.

You are able to enter education expenses without a 1098-T under 'Expenses and Scholarships' in the Education section (see screenshot).

Enter the 1099-Q distribution first, then go through the Education Expenses section.  Only the earnings could be fully or partly taxable, as long as expenses exceed the 529 distribution.

Click the link for helpful info on the 1099-Q.
