My education expenses page says that I am working toward a degree, but I gained my bachelor's degree in 2016. Does this specification matter?

No. As long as you were working towards your degree in 2016, then this answer is correct. You must have been pursuing your degree during the tax year to qualify for the American Opportunity credit.
