Q. Could I apply for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) or Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)?
A. That's not clear because MSU is saying the course doesn't qualify for a 1098-T and a 1098-T is a requirement to claim a credit.
I'm of the opinion that the course does qualify. MSU is an "eligible institution" and that's the basic requirement for the LLC. For the AOTC, there's an additional requirement that the student was enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential. In TurboTax, after saying no to having a 1098-T, answer yes that you qualify for an exception.
Yes, $6245 is the amount that you would claim for the credit. That means you would get the full AOTC (depending on your tax liability) or $1249 LLC (20% x 6245, up to your tax liability)
I noticed that on the invoice the recipient is "edX Boot Camps" and not MSU, even tho the invoice has the MSU logo, colors etc.
Would that mean that my school is edX and not MSU?
Q. Would that mean that my school is edX and not MSU?
A. Probably. But I don't think anyone here is going to able to give you a "for sure" answer. You may have to ask both edX and MSU.
