My son is a high school student taking some college level courses that require a fee and generate a 1098-T. Is this treated any differently than a formal college student for tax credit purposes?

Yes, it does qualify for 1098-T tuition payments and yes - high school students are "treated" slightly different than "real" college students. High school students (dual enrollment student) are not eligible for the American Opportunity Credit. However, if the early college high school provides a college credit course, the student may qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) or Tuition and Fees deduction.
When going through TurboTax data entry, you will be asked about your son' s status. Based on your entries and income, either LLC or Tuition and Fees deduction will be applied.
