College expenses

"We are the parents of a dependant child who is a full-time college student. He had tuition expenses last year which were paid using a student loan. The Turbo Tax program says we qualify for the American Opportunity Credit. Is that right? Would that be a credit for us even though the loan had not yet been paid and is in our sons name? He is 21 years old and lives at home full-time being supported by us. Thanks for your help. "
