If I conduct business during a vacation, can I expense that trip?

Yes, if your trip includes conferences, trade shows, or other events that support and grow your business. The deductible expenses are “ordinary” and “necessary” for business.

To add a little clarity - in order to deduct the trip, the primary purpose must be for business. If the business you conducted was incidental to the vacation, then the trip is not deductible. But expenses directly related to the business conducted are deductible.
If the primary purpose of the trip was for business, but you combined a vacation with it, then you can deduct the expenses but only the business-related ones and transportation. Keep in mind, if it was a family vacation, only the business owner's portion of expenses are deductible. Anyone else's expenses must have a bona fide business purpose to be included.
