Was entering data for our farm income, went to enter a form 990-G that had an amount in box 6, unfortunately Turbotax only has provisions for boxes 2, 7 and 9. This is a taxable grant, how do I enter this form 990-G?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
In TurboTax Home & Business, go to "Show Topic List" in the black header bar at the top of the program.
You can enter a 1099-G for a taxable grant in TurboTax. Choose Other 1099-G Income from the Other Common Income options. You will be given the option to enter Box 6 if you choose this option. If you choose the Other 1099-G (not unemployment or state refunds), you will get the following screens:
Your response appears to be spot on, but I can't seem to find the "other common income" option under business & farm. I am using TurboTax desktop, home & business version running on a Windows 11 platform.
In TurboTax Home & Business, go to "Show Topic List" in the black header bar at the top of the program.
Perfect! It was just where you said it was, and I was able to enter the information. New question - how do I get it to show up under farm income since the form was under personal income?
Unfortunately that entry doesn't add it to farm income. You'll have to go back and delete that entry.
Then, scroll down in the wages and income section to the farm income and farm rental section. Click start next to that and then enter the information about your farm - the name and address and whatnot. After you enter that the system will start asking questions about the farm in order to get you the best deal possible. One of the first questions that the system will ask is "Did you get a 1099-G?" In your case you'll answer yes, of course, and that will get all of the 1099-G income on the farm where it belongs.
Keep going from there to enter the expenses and other types of income for the farm.
Thanks! That is where I started this journey, unfortunately the screen for entering 1099-G info doesn’t include box 6 for unknown reasons. People have been struggling with this for years, one of many idiosyncrasies in TurboTax that doesn’t get fixed.
That's true. Because a taxable grant for a farm is considered an agriculture payment and generally reported in box 7.
In this instance I would enter the amount in box 6 - if it was for the farm - as though it were sent in box 7. A taxable grant would need to end up on line 4a of schedule F which is listed as "Agricultural Program Payments" and defined in the IRS instructions as -
Enter on line 4a the total of the government agricultural program payments that you received. This includes the following amounts.
If you enter your amount from box 6 into box 7 it will end up in the correct part of the form.
