You can itemize your deductions on CA return even if you took the Standard Deduction on your Federal return. When you enter your Medical expenses on your Federal return, TurboTax will carry over those expenses to your state return.

Once your Itemized Deductions exceed your Standard Deduction for California, you will be switched over.

If you need to delete the medical expenses reported on the sate return:

  1. Go to Federal Taxes.
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Click on All tax breaks.
  4. Scroll down to Medical.
