Error Code 54

I successfully e-filed my federal 1041. I get an Error Code 54 when I attempt to file my 541 with California State.

 

The Error Code pop-up states that my Turbotax software is not up to date, and that updating the software will solve the problem. Upon checking for updates, I am told that I have the latest version. 

 

I called Turbotax support but the individual kept thinking that I was using an on-line product and needed to clear my cache...

 

Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

If you are using the Download version there are a few tricks that have worked to clear this error.

Since we can't know your individual computer/system configuration in this forum, all we can do is pass on what has worked for other users.

 

Since you've tried uninstall/reinstall, are you running as Administrator?  All TurboTax and related files on your C drive?  Anti-virus software turned off? Manual Update?

Error Code 54

Seems like this is a recurring problem year after year in reading the posts.  I'm doing my 2025 return early because me 1041 is straight forward.  But get the dreaded error code 54 even after updating, reinstalling and updating again, turn off VPN and stopping all ad blockers.  No success.  I'm going to wait a couple more weeks then check for updates again.  If that doesn't work, I'm going to snail mail the return.

Same issue with TT 2025 Business for me too. Trust filing worked last year no problem but this year no such luck.

 

Was on the phone with TurboTax for 4 hours yesterday (Jan 30) and no luck. Tried different computers, reinstalling, running super updaters, disabling antivirus, firewalls, running as administrator,  etc.  All no joy. In the end, it was suggested there are forms that still need updating, although program does not indicate that.

 

I'll wait till February 6 update to see if that fixes things. If not, snail mail will have to do.

I turned off my Norton virus program and that solved my problem

@btehrani93 If you're still experiencing issues, here is the list of troubleshooting steps for the desktop software, including methods (such as temporarily disabling antivirus software) mentioned above:

 

1. First, make sure your software is fully updated, and then try again.

 

2. If the manual updates do not resolve the issue, there are some general FAQ troubleshooting practices for issues with TurboTax Desktop:

To make sure TurboTax runs smoothly:

  • Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
  • Make sure you have administrator rights on your computer and TurboTax is running as administrator:
  • Right-click the TurboTax icon or setup icon and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, select the Run this program as administrator box and select OK.
  • In the Control Panel under Internet Options, add https://*.intuit.com to Trusted Sites. Set security level to Medium.
  • Turn off antivirus software and Windows Defender.
  • Add TurboTax Desktop to your allowed apps in Windows Defender.
  • Clean up and defragment your hard drive.
  • Run Windows Update to keep your computer up-to-date.
  • Update your computer's hardware drivers.
  • Update your security software for firewall, virus, and spyware protection.
  • Make sure you're the only user on your computer running TurboTax. If you're not, switch users and sign out of TurboTax from the other account. If you can't do that, shut down your computer and try again. (Error: 70001)

Alternative steps for Mac users.

Tried everything, then uninstalled and reinstalled. Still getting the same error.

Because some people have been able to move past this error after installing the update, I think the issue causing you and others to still be stuck must be related to a hiccup with actually getting the update fully installed; let's confirm your state update with these steps:

 

  1. Select View Installed Updates from the Online dropdown menu CA-trust1.jpg
  2. Press the [+] next to California fiduciary to confirm your software received the February update CA-trust2.jpg

If the February update is not listed, then it hasn't fully installed, and there is some interference preventing this from happening. Additional troubleshooting steps to follow at this point:

 

Run as Administrator:

Right-click the TurboTax icon
Choose Properties
Go to the Compatibility tab
Select Run this program as an administrator

 

Check System Time:

Ensure your computer's date and time are accurate, as discrepancies can cause secure handshake failures with the IRS.

 

Firewall/VPN:

Temporarily disable VPNs or antivirus software during the update and filing process.

 

- Borrow a different laptop to install the software, load your .tax file, and e-file

 

Troubleshoot TurboTax Desktop for Windows issues (FAQ):

I need help installing my software

- Run the Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
- Delete the downloaded file and download TurboTax again from InstallTurboTax.com. Sometimes files get corrupted during the download process.
- Restart your computer in Selective Startup Mode, and then install TurboTax.
- Install TurboTax on a different computer.

I need help updating my software

- If updates appear to freeze or stop at 0% or 100%, don't end the download process, even if the Task Manager says TurboTax is not responding. Wait up to 15 minutes before doing anything.

- If the Updater closes prematurely while you're checking for updates (usually with an error message or number), run the disk cleanup tool to delete unnecessary files and empty the Recycle Bin. Then select Check for Updates in TurboTax to resume the update process where it left off.

- You can also download and install a manual update.

 

Troubleshoot problems with Windows Installer and the Microsoft .NET Framework (FAQ):

The Microsoft .NET Framework helps software developers create applications quickly, efficiently, and with less code clutter. TurboTax for Windows relies heavily on the .NET Framework, so it's crucial that your .NET system files are up to date and functional.

- Windows 11 comes with .NET Framework 4.8

- Windows 10 comes with .NET Framework 4.6

- Windows 8 comes with .NET 4.5, with automatic updates

Troubleshooting

- If you encounter errors or other problems with .NET, download and run Microsoft's .NET Framework Repair Tool.

- If that doesn't resolve your issue, run the System File Checker and then open Control Panel and choose Programs and Files. Open .NET Framework 4 and select Repair.

- If the issue persists, download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 from Microsoft's site.

Windows Installer numerical errors

If you receive a 4- or 5-digit Windows Installer error, we have specific help articles for your situation.

- 1327: Windows Installer cannot write to the specified drive

- 1601: Windows Installer service could not be accessed

- 1603: Fatal error during installation

 

Manually Update TurboTax Business Software (FAQ):

If you're having trouble updating your TurboTax Business 2025 software using the "Check for Updates" method, you can get the latest federal program update here:

1. Close TurboTax Business and all other programs except this browser window.
2. Select this link to download the 291 MB update.
3. Save the update file to your Windows desktop.
4. Double-click the update file w_bizrelsuperpatch... on your desktop to install the manual update.

 

Security software and TurboTax (FAQ):

However, if your firewall blocks TurboTax software's internet access you won't be able to e-file, download state programs, or get the latest program updates.

 

In some cases, security software may misinterpret the actions of legitimate programs (like TurboTax). The security software would then block the program's internet access.

 

To prevent or resolve these conflicts:

1. Download the latest updates from your software's support site.
2. Adjust the settings or rules on your security software to allow selected programs (like TurboTax) to install and function as intended.

Firewall software resources

Most firewalls ask you for permission when an "unknown" program attempts to connect to the Internet. If you previously told your firewall to block TurboTax, your firewall will continue to do so until you add it to the list of allowed programs. In some cases, you may need to add TurboTax ports and addresses to the firewall's list.

 

Advanced users running Windows can manually configure firewall software by adding these processes as exceptions to Microsoft Defender or other installed firewall software:

- C:/Program Files/Common Files/IntuitUpdate Service/IntuitUpdater.exe
- C:/Program Files/Common Files/IntuitUpdate Service/IntuitUpdateService.exe
