EIN filing

Hello. I recently just filed my taxes but totally forgot I have a EIN number for my company. But when I used turbo tax they didn't ask for my EIN number or my company name. So it just used my regular social security number. Will this be a problem because I didn't provide my company name or my EIN. My company is a sole proprietor.

EIN filing

No - Since you are a sole proprietor filing a Schedule C, an EIN is not required.

 

To enter your EIN please follow these steps:

  1. In your return click on Income and Expenses and then click the Start/Revisit box in the Self-Employment section.
  2. On the Your 2019 self-employed work summary screen, click on Edit next to your business. 
  3. On the Here's your [business] info screen, click on the Edit box next to General Info
  4. On the Let's Review.. screen, in the Payments and Identification section, click Edit
  5. Continue to the screen, Do you have your own Employer ID Number (EIN)?  Mark the YES button, enter the EIN, and click Continue

If you already filed you taxes you need to amend your return to make any changes.

Wait until your return has been fully processes and you received your refund ( if you are expecting a refund ), then amend your return. 

Here's how you amend your return:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents , select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Follow the instructions, your refund or tax due will change to 0. This is normal on amended returns.

Amended return can't be e-file, you need to print it and mail it in.

 

On the Tax Home web page when the Form 1040X for amending a 2019 tax return becomes available there will be a link - Amend (change) return. Form 1040X is expected to be available on 02/27/2020.
