Can I deduct expenses for a related side business from the income I receive from my primary business?

I am a self-employed web developer who has a primary source of income from an international client and have started another web development project that is not connected with my client, though it is related to my work as a self-employed web developer. I have not received income from this project but it has given me expenses. I am wondering if I can deduct these expenses from my income.
