As a contractor working in Afghanistan, can I deduct the cost of airline tickets on my taxes??

Depends ... are you an employee ?   If so is the employer going to send you a W-2 in January ?   Or is it a foreign employer ?

Or are you self employed filing your own business return like a Sch C ?

I am a employee and work for a US company. I get a W-2.

Then no, you cannot deduct any job-related expenses.  The tax law that went into effect for 2018 and beyond says that W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on their federal returns
