I've entered all Business expenses into Turbo Tax, why is it not populating Schedule C?

Here are the most common reasons why TurboTax isn't populating that form:

1. The "Business Intent" Checkbox

  1. TurboTax needs to confirm that your activity is actually a business and not a hobby. If you haven't completed the "About Your Business" section entirely—specifically the part where you confirm you are involved in the business to make a profit—it won't generate the form.
  2. Fix: Go back to the Wages & Income section, find Self-Employment, and make sure every "General Info" questions have been answered.

2. Net Income Threshold

  1. The IRS generally doesn't require a Schedule C if your net earnings from self-employment are less than $400, though you typically still want it to report a loss. However, if your expenses exceed your income, TurboTax might be "parking" the data until you finish the "Special Situations" section (like Home Office or Depreciation) to determine if you can actually claim a loss this year.

3. Business Profile Errors

If the Business Code (NAICS) or the Accounting Method (Cash vs. Accrual) wasn't selected, the form remains in a "draft" state and won't show up in the final preview or the "Forms Mode."

Fix: Ensure you have selected a valid 6-digit industry code.

4. Personal vs. Business Categorization

Double-check that you entered the expenses under Self-Employment Income and Expenses and not under "Other Deductions" or "Itemized Deductions" (Schedule A).

The Difference: Schedule A is for personal items like medical bills; Schedule C is strictly for your 1099 or freelance work.

How to verify if it’s there (Hidden in plain sight)

If you are using the Desktop version, click Forms in the top right corner. Look for "Schedule C" in the list on the left.

If it’s there but blank, there is a data entry error.

If it’s missing entirely, the "Self-Employment" section isn't considered "active" yet.
