Why is the irs requesting a w2/1099 information request?

They can ask for anything at anytime for any reason and you should reply as directed ASAP ...  however the most likely reason for those forms is because they did not get a copy from the issuing party.

Or you mailed in the return and failed to attach copies with the paper return as required.
