Why is the amended tax return showing no refund, when the recalculated return shows a refund in the details page?

You will still get the refund from the first original return or still need to pay the first tax due.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.

Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

thank you very much, VolvoGirl, I appreciate it! and let me provide more info.

My original returns were filed and accepted. I owed money for both Fed and State.

I'm now trying to amend both to add a dependent (my daughter), and the calculation does show a difference in my favor in both Fed and State.

While comparing both returns (original and amended) clearly show where I am supposed to get a credit (I looked line by line), the amended summaries for both Fed and Sate shows 0 refunds.

Line 37 of the filed 1040 shows an amount superior to line 37 on the 1040x, (line 19, "Tax and Credits" shows $2,000 on 1040, and 2500, on 1040x) and yet the 1040x side by side comparison doesn't reflect that difference.

I'm am confused as to why the "total tax due" on the 1040x recap shows the Tax amount (line 16) of the adjusted 1040 without the child credit (lines 19 and 20 of that section same section of the adjusted 1040?
