Yes, when you file a return and then amend it, you will get different results at different points in the process.

If your original return shows a refund, you will still get that refund.

When you start your amended return, the refund goes to zero. This is based on the idea that the first return was processed and the refund was received, so now you are even with the IRS.

If you see a refund after you complete your amended return, you will get that as a separate payment. If you see a balance due, your have to pay back that amount.

Make sure you are using these guidelines when amending. Do not amend until your first return is completely processed. So yes, you will get your state refund and have to pay it back with your amendment.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
