So I'll assume you have already spoken to the IRS by phone.
So if you don't get good info from the IRS, then the next step, if you wish, is the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. It's a free service, and they are especially prone to help if you have not been able to get timely info from the IRS or especially if you have an economic hardship.
