The Form 1040-X for amending a 2025 federal tax return is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 03/04/2026

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

The previous post on this thread states "An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed." What does this mean for me, when I have already e-filed and need to file an amendment (looks like a late-arriving W2 will cause me to owe nine more dollars).

@ItsMe-Jeremy Since you e-filed the original tax return you will be able to e-file the 2025 amended tax return, Form 1040-X, at any time on or before October 15, 2026.

If your original return showed a refund due, make sure you have received your refund BEFORE you file an extension.

Filing a tax extension allows you to avoid late-filing penalties; however, filing a tax extension doesn’t give you more time to pay your taxes.
