TurboTax Home & Business allows you to e-file forms 1096-MISC together with form 1096. You do not need to print them out and paper-file. If you choose to paper-file, you need to print the forms on the pre-printed red-ink forms provided by the IRS. E-filing is much more convenient and is free.

To prepare forms 1099-MISC or W-2 in TurboTax Home & Business , save your open return and start a new return.

  • On the Start a new return screen, click on Prepare W2/1099 (see attached screenshot).
  • On the next page, you will be given a choice between preparing your forms Online or using your desktop.
  • We recommend doing it online as you can e-file for free. You can still print the forms to send to your employees or contractors.
  • Click Choose Online and you will be taken to the TurboTax Quick Employer Forms (QEF) website.
  • Sign in with your TurboTax username and password. If you do not have an account, click Create Account to create a new account. Note carefully the username and password as you need then if you need to retrieve the forms later.
  • After signing in, click on Create New Form
  • On the next page, choose the type of forms you wish to prepare then click Continue to begin entering information for your forms.

Thank you. I'll just use the E-file option then...the mailing option seems such a hassle dealing with the red ink IRS provided 1096, which isn't even the same width as regular letter size.

What if I can't file 1099's online because one recipient is in Puerto Rico and the online filing doesn't support it?

You can print and mail them. The 1096 must be printed and mailed by February 28th.

The copies for the independent contractors should be mailed or delivered by January 31st.

You need to purchase an official 1096 form through the IRS or at an office supply store.
