When can I file a 1040X amended return for my 2020 tax returns if I filed through turbotax?

I filed my taxes with Turbotax and they messed up and didn't add any of my forms (W-2 and 1098-T) only the refund relief credit was filed. Now I'm trying to file an amended return but Turbotax isn't letting me and other places are confusing. What can I do?

You need to wait until March 25th to file an amended return.

Yes, you will need to file an amended return in order to claim the income reported on the W-2.

The 1098-T might produce additional taxable income or an education credit that you can claim.

H&R Block is letting me do an Amended Return today without having to wait. I already received my return from Turbo Tax, will that money be taken back if I file my Amended Return with H & R Block?

So are you saying you have already received a Federal refund?

When one prepares an amended return, there are at least 4 possible results, depending on one's situation.  One may receive additional refund; one may have to pay back all or part of a refund received; one may owe additional tax (if applicable), or there may be no change.

It's difficult to amend a return with a different company's product, but it's possible.  If you use their website, you might have to re-enter everything from your original return first exactly as it was filed and then amend it, but I'm not familiar with the process at H&R Block.  Or are you referring to physical preparation by one of their brick and mortar agents?

I filed with Turbotax. My w-2 and education credit was not claimed.

So I only received the 1800 from the stimulus.

I am missing the 161 from the w-2 and the 1000 from my education credit.

So I don't know if the irs will take my 1800 back of I file an amended return or if they are just gonna send what I'm missing

I'm a fellow user, not a tax person.  You won't know the net affect of amending (i.e., the bottom line) of whether you owe any tax or get another refund until you prepare the Form 1040X and enter the missing items.    If you are due additional refund based on the W-2 info and any 1098-T info, they should just send you what you didn't receive.   It will depend on several factors:  income, withholding, whether you qualify for education credits, have any taxable scholarship income, etc.

If all you received originally was a stimulus payment (Recovery Rebate Credit) that you are indeed qualified for,  it may not be affected since for most people receiving that credit, income doesn't matter until one's 2020 AGI is over $75,000 (or higher depending on filing status.)   I'll assume you were not a dependent on someone else's 2020 return, since you didn't mention it and since you did receive the Recovery Rebate Credit.     Here's info from the IRS site:

"Generally, if you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020, were not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment, you are eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit.  Your credit amount will be reduced if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

"Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above."

In the meantime, until you can prepare the Form 1040X Amended Return (expected to be available 3/25 in TurboTax), do NOT make any changes in your original return.  Do NOT add the W-2 or any 1098-T.   When you start the amending process, it has to start off with your return exactly as it was when it was originally filed.   It will prompt you when it's OK to enter the W-2 and any 1098-T, etc.

Buddy you aren't helping at all.

Im just going to file my amended return with H & R Block since all your replies are only making me more confused and I already received my money since it was the only thing keeping me from filing an amended return. And I cannot and do not want to wait until the 25th to file, especially since you can't file amended returns electronically as per the IRS instructions

Be careful amending in TurboTax Online.  The 2020 version of the 1040X won't be ready until 03/25.  The version that is in there now hasn't been updated to include the recovery rebate.   Plus, you want to wait and see what the IRS does with your original return before amending it.    And this year, you can e-file an amendment.

If you already received the $1800, you will claim the education credit if eligible and your withholdings on Form 1040X.

I'm sorry if I provided too much information and made it confusing.  This is mainly a user community forum, and we try to assist other users.   Perhaps the recent comment by tax expert @ DawnC  was more succinct and helpful.

You also wrote:  "especially since you can't file amended returns electronically as per the IRS instructions"

As DawnC pointed out, it should indeed be possible to efile a 2020 amended return once TurboTax opens amending on March 25.  (Efiling of amended returns became available in the latter part of last year.)

But I understand you don't want to wait until 3/25.  Unfortunately, that's the expected date, and while it's subject to change, I don't know that's there is anything folks at TurboTax can do to speed it up.
