What if I have 2 exemptions on my W-4 but only 1 listed on my tax return?

The number of exemptions that you claim on your W-4 determines how much your employer withholds for federal taxes. If you claim 2 exemptions on your W-4 but you actually have only 1 that you can claim on your tax return, then you may owe tax. That is the only effect.
