What happens if I do not amend my taxes to claim my child?

My child's father was going to claim her on his taxes, however I was advised that because she is on my healthcare insurance that is subsidized that I will need to claim her on my taxes. I have already filed and received my return. I have "roughly" amended my claim on turbo tax without officially filing the amendment. The new amount says that I owe almost $5,000.00. I do not have the $5,000.00. Do I have to add my child as a dependant?

If you add a child you should get a refund.  5,000 sounds like a lot.  Are you sure it's a tax due?  Did you look at the actual 1040X return to see why you owe?  Did you wait to amend until the first return is fully processed and you got the first refund or paid a tax due?  Sounds like you did the amended return wrong.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
