I need to amend my 2020 return that was e-filed through TT on-line by adding Form 8606 Non-deductible IRA (in previous years TT prompted me about IRA deductions, but not this year, which caused me to omit the form in the original submission - I am sooooo mad!). I tried amending using instructions in FAQ, but after adding non-deductible IRA info, the amendment workflow goes straight into preparing the State form (which I did NOT do through TT on-line because my state has its own process and do NOT need to amend).
I cancelled and retried to amend Federal with the same outcome - as soon as Federal is finished (by going through fake validation/checking screens), TT doesn't prompt to submit the amendment and instead just kicks off the State form.
Has anyone one found a way to break this vicious cycle of going through State for the Federal amendment?
Also, does anyone know how the Federal amendment is then submitted - i.e. will it be just incremental/changed forms or the whole thing and will TT try to charge me again? Their FAQ on amendments is useless- it doesn't explain anything to that matter or how to exclude State.
Thank you (and sorry for sounding frustrated - I expected more consistency and less bugs for the high fees TT charges).

If you original tax file had a state, then you will not be able to amend without it going through the state information. Just add the state again to complete the amend.
TurboTax does not charge for amends, no matter how many times you need to file an amend.
This isn't necessarily true. If your amendment includes something that requires something more than that "free" turbotax, they will require payment. For example. I failed to include a 1098T on my original return. Once I added it, they forced me to upgrade to claim the American Opportunity Credit. And with an Amendment, they don't allow you to deduct the costs from the return, you have to pay for it up front.
