If you chose to have your fees deducted from your federal refund, but entered wrong or closed bank account information for your direct deposit, you are going to have an aggravating, frustrating situation.  Your refund will go back to the third party bank. The third party bank might issue and mail you a check, or they might send your refund back to the IRS and then you will have to wait for the IRS to mail you a check.

If the third party bank mails the check, it will come in a plain envelope via first class mail so make sure you open all mail and do not assume anything is junk mail without opening it.  While you are waiting, make sure that the address you entered on your tax return is correct, or your problem will be even worse.

When you choose “refund processing” your refund goes FIRST  from the IRS to the third party bank.  Then the bank takes your fees out of your refund and sends the rest of the refund to you.

TurboTax stopped issuing those prepaid TT Visa cards several years ago.  I am not sure if you can get a replacement or not.  You can call the 800 number on the back of your card to find out.

Ignore the prompt asking for your card number.  Choose #1 for lost, stolen, or cards never received, then choose #2, enter SS# if prompted and continue following the instructions.

If you e-filed:

Banking information for direct deposit is wrong or closed

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return.  Expect a delay of at least a couple of weeks to receive your refund.

Here is what the IRS says about entering incorrect banking information

If your refund is sent back to the IRS—- make certain that the address you entered on your Form 1040 is correct.  And…open all mail, even if it looks like junk mail.

Can I correct the deposit info on the 1040?

Tax return on expired turbotax visa card

@Savannahjefferson2020 If you have already filed your tax return, the IRS does not allow you to change the way you are receiving your refund.  Again---if you filed your return using banking information for a closed account, the refund is going to be sent back to the third party bank or to the IRS.   A check will be mailed to you.  Make sure the address you entered on your tax return is correct.  Open all of your mail even mail that looks like junk mail.

Tax return on expired turbotax visa card

How can I find out if my refund was sent back to the IRS? The IRS website, turbo tax, and TPG all say my tax return is in my account. My turbo tax card even says there's been a deposit but my balance is still $0.
