Tax refund received before IRS approved return?

My federal return was not yet approved, but I received a refund.  Is this correct?

OK, yes I saw that.  But is the return approved?  I have delayed filing my state return because I don't know if my federal return has been labeled accurate.  One depends on the other as in most states.
