Stimulus checks

If the stimulus checks do not affect my income why is I mistakenly report that I received 1200 and in fact received 2400 and IRS takes the additional 1200 out of my tax refund. I didn't in fact see any reason why this amount should even have to be on the return in the first place. The explanation I received still makes no sense.

If you had any rebate recovery credit on line 30 of your return (regardless of if it was accurate or not), it was an amount that was added to your refund amount.  If you were not entitled to the rebate recovery amount, your refund would be reduced by the amount on line 30.

@wlengels

Here's how it works.

On 1040 you report what you did not get, not what you did get.
