Should I file an amended return?

I filed my 2020 taxes before the bill was signed to allow for the $10,200 of unemployment to not be taxed. I owed just around $100 to Federal and State combined.

I paid taxes on the $10,200 already. I know they said for people who already filed to just wait for them to fix it. But I was wondering if I need to file an amended return since originally I owed and I feel like with the new info I would have gotten a refund.

please advise, thank you very much.

You do not need to file an amended return unless the calculations make you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return. Please see IRS to recalculate taxes on unemployment benefits; refunds to start in May

Should I file an amended return?

What if I'm in NC

Should I file an amended return?

Hello,  should I trust the IRS will amend my return. It's been 2 months, and I can't wait any longer.  I should have the freedom to able to amend them and not rely on government employees...?

You can amend it, but you will likely increase the delay time in processing, so you should avoid that.   The IRS sent out the first batch of additional refunds due to UE this week and they will continue sending out those payments over the coming weeks.     @ejm_003

TurboTax calculations are correct and up-to-date for your state. You can go ahead and finish and file your NC state return.   @user2233445577

Thanks for the reply.  I do check my amended status often and it still says it hasn't been done, and the employees I call just tell me what I already know.  I'm trying to find out which district office my return goes to first before being sent to D.C. and try them directly. It shouldn't be this hard getting information that belongs to me or anyone else for the matter, the unemployment department is out of hand, the IRS is getting out of hand, hhhhmmmm, what's going on with our local government, but then again I could wake up and have my plus up in my account,  but who wants to live on "Could."

The IRS just released last week that they are starting to process the returns with the unemployment exemption.  There have been real challenges in getting all of the last-minute changes into the system on the fly.  Your frustration is felt by many.  However, it's still up to the IRS and if you submit any amended return when it is not needed you will only add to the delays.
