Question

Should I file an amended return?

I filed my 2020 taxes before the bill was signed to allow for the $10,200 of unemployment to not be taxed. I owed just around $100 to Federal and State combined.

I paid taxes on the $10,200 already. I know they said for people who already filed to just wait for them to fix it. But I was wondering if I need to file an amended return since originally I owed and I feel like with the new info I would have gotten a refund.

please advise, thank you very much.

You do not need to file an amended return unless the calculations make you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return. Please see IRS to recalculate taxes on unemployment benefits; refunds to start in May
