Should I amend or wait and repay?

If I filed early and claimed the stimulus rebate before they announced they were reissuing payments, and now I HAVE received my economic impact payment, what do I do? I did not realize that the payments were going to be re-issued, we were told that claiming it in our taxes was the only way. So now I have a return submitted (and accepted by the IRS) that is including that payment. Do I need to amend my return? Will I do that before or after it's refunded? I want to make sure that I'm not going to get into legal trouble and I want to make sure it's paid back.

You need to wait until the IRS processes your return before you can make any changes. It is possible that they will adjust it to reflect the correct amount of stimulus payments due you, as they know how much money they sent you.
