Reviewed every year and faxing IRS

I have two questions. Now keep in mind my husband and I have filed the same way every year and have gotten pretty regular tax returns back. No big jumps or anything like that. We are eligible for and do have filed eitc and actc. We filed married jointly and my husband has changed jobs over the years but no big income changes between years. He's been at the same single job for the past three years now. And EVERY year we have been "randomly selected" for review and our taxes are always held up until April and that's with tax advocate help.... Why do we get reviewed every year for the past 6 years? We have never had to correct anything and we have never filed incorrectly they literally hold it and then advocates get them to finally release it but not until April.... This can't be random....

Second question is this year they are holding it again but the advocates actually informed me it is to verify the single w2 we filed because the employer hasn't submitted their side. I have the w2, paystubs and even a letter from his employer. Is there a fax number I could fax this into the IRS so they can verify it is a legit w2 and release our refund??

Reviewed every year and faxing IRS

1) Unfortunately, we do not know why you are getting selected for review. Below, I've included the methods the IRS uses when they select a return for extra attention:

  • Random selection and computer screening - sometimes returns are selected based solely on a statistical formula. We compare your tax return against “norms” for similar returns. We develop these “norms” from audits of a statistically valid random sample of returns, as part of the National Research Program the IRS conducts. The IRS uses this program to update return selection information.
  • Related examinations – we may select your returns when they involve issues or transactions with other taxpayers, such as business partners or investors, whose returns were selected for audit.

Next, an experienced auditor reviews the return. They may accept it; or if the auditor notes something questionable, they will identify the items noted and forward the return for assignment to an examining group.

2) It is unlikely that the IRS will release the refund early if you provide your copy of the W-2 and the supplemental documentation. They really need the employer to provide it because they use it to compare the W-2 information you submit on your return. However, you can always call them and ask: 800 829 1040.
