Retrieve prior year return

I've got a copy of TT2017 and want to open my TY2017 return to convert it to a PDF. TT2017 will not let me open the federal file without downloading (and paying for) a state file.

How do I get into my TY2017 federal return?

I've seen several users posting about Error 190.  Is this the error message you're seeing?

Yes, that's what I'm getting.If I remember from last night, that FAQ just tells me I have to download (and pay for, again) the state tax software.

I think I've just got to dig through my piling system and find what should be a file with the hard copies and my disk that never made it to the file drawer and/or wait for the IRS to send me the code to re-activate my accoount with them.

@rflemin29 So you don't actually have TT2017 installed on your computer?  If you do, you probably have one free state download that was included with that software.  You shouldn't have to pay again.

Thanks. I've found lots of files created by TT17 (not the actual returns mind you), but not the actual software. I've found found the TT17 box, but not the disk. I borrowed a copy of TT17 from a neighbor, but that does not include the state software.

What version of 2017 did you install? The Basic version does not have a free state program.  There are 2 versions of Deluxe. One with a free state and Deluxe without a state.  Premier and Home & Business come with one free state program download.

How many different states do you need to file in? Just one or more?  

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW TAX RETURN)

Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.
