My return is being rejected saying a dependent filed their taxes as a independent. But none of my children have filed their taxes and the IRS sent a letter by mail warning of a possible fraud filing that we are trying to work with them to rectify.  what are my options...extend?? (I dont owe federal but I do for state)

You cannot overcome a duplicate SSN rejection.    If someone has used a SSN for one of your dependents already, then the only way you can file now and claim that dependent is to file by mail.  You cannot e-file.   Print, sign and mail your return.....and let the IRS sort out the duplicate SSN.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
