Rejected Return: IND-517-01

Hi, I e-filed my 1040 on Apr 18 2023, but quickly received an email stating my tax return was rejected with the following error: "IND-517-01 - A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked."

My son had e-filed his 1040 two days before I e-filed mine claiming him as my dependent. I opened his return and verified the following in the "Step-by-Step" "Personal Info" section:

  • [CHECKED] Another taxpayer can claim [NAME] on their tax return
  • [Circle FILLED] Another taxpayer will claim [NAME] in 2022.

In addition, in my son's 1040 PDF form, I see this filled:

  • [Yes] Can another taxpayer (such as your parent) claim you as a dependent?
  • [Yes] If you answered ’Yes’ to question 1, are you actually claimed as a dependent on that person’s tax return?

In summary, I feel like both my son and I filled our 1040s correctly. But the IRS doesn't think so, and I do not know why.

My questions are:

  • Did my son incorrectly file his 1040? If so, what Turbotax prompts should he correct? Should he then send an amended 1040?
  • How do I resolve the "IND-517-01" on my 1040? Are there any changes I should make on my 1040? Should I send my 1040 in by mail with a check?

Thank you for your help.

Rejected Return: IND-517-01

I have a similar situation to you (Dependent e-filed first, I e-filed later - all information was correct identifying as dependent on his return).

I also received IND-517-01 and was certain my dependent filled it out correctly but he received an IND-452 error before I even e-filed, and upon filing again has continued to receive that error code. There's a possibility someone used his information for a fraudulent tax return, so we're looking into that, and this may not be the same situation but if you don't mind me asking, did your dependent also receive a rejection from the IRS when e-filing or did theirs get accepted and only yours is rejected?
