Rejected E-file - For Dependent SS number used in another return

Had Federal and state rejected 3 times for one of the SS numbers either wrong or on another return. Clicked on suggested help . This is what it said;

Went through all 4 SS numbers and they are correct, there was no [ ] n he description field to indicate which one was at fault either. Made sure everything was correct for the third time and it still got rejected. What is the deal ?? Why is this not working correctly. Do I need to mail my returns now and if I do will they just be rejected once the IRS gets them ? What about my state return as well ? I paid for E-file and if I was going to have to mail them in I would have just gotten the form at the post office and not paid for it..

If someone already filed a federal tax return using a Social Security number that is also on your tax return then you will have to print and mail your tax return, it cannot be e-filed.

A mailed tax return will not be rejected.  However, the IRS will be sending both parties a letter in the mail within a year to investigate.  The loser of the investigation will have to pay back any federal tax refund plus penalties and interest.

That would be fine but as I said none of the dependents filled a return. So what now ???

Someone other than your dependent filed a tax return with a Social Security number that is also on your tax return either by mistake or intentional, so the IRS rejected your return.  You will have to print and mail the return.
