Refund delayed, I made an error.

I e-filed, the refund is delayed. I find I made an error in entering my Social Security benefits amount.

Will the IRS correct the error?

How long might my refund be delayed?

Might they even require me to refile or amend my return?

It depends- at this time, you will need to wait until your return is either rejected or accepted.  If your return is accepted, then you need to amend the return.  When completing an amended return, you should wait until the return is fully processed, and that means after you receive your refund, if you were expecting one.  Then you will know if the IRS made any adjustments. If you received the refund you expected, here is some more information on filing amendments: How to File an Amended Tax Return with the IRS

If the return is rejected, you can correct the issue and e-file again with the correct amounts.

You will just have to wait and see---our predictions would not be helpful.   If the IRS has your return they might catch the mistake you made with the SSA1099 and correct it.   If they do not catch it, then after the return has been fully processed you can amend it.   You can continue to watch the IRS refund site for information.

IRS cxomputers are adept at comparing Lne 6a with the true amount from SSA, and correcting it.

That's what they do. It's in their nature.
