recovery rebate amendment

Hello, I made a mistake when claiming the recovery rebate. The account they went through was from my last partner who I don't have contact with anymore and both my latest checks went to that account. (the first stimulus check last year allowed on get my payment to change the routing information which I thought it would be temporarily). What can I do? an identity theft form 14039 since I have all that information to back this up? File for an amendment? and if so, how? since the turbo tax app is not letting me do any amendment at the time.

No, don't amend your income tax return, if you made an error.  The IRS will calculate the correct amount of the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to your tax return and continue processing your return. If a correction is needed, there may be a slight delay in processing your return and the IRS will send you a notice explaining any change made.

You only file Form 14039, if your identity was stolen.  If you are a victim of identity theft, you may mail the form 14039 to the IRS.

If a filer's bank information is invalid, or the account has been closed, the bank will return the payment to the IRS and  a check will be mailed to the taxpayer's address on file  Paper checks and prepaid debit cards are being sent in another round.

“make the correction to your tax return and continue processing your return.”

What exactly do you mean by this, do you mind explaining? Thank you. I ask because I already got my regular return, my first check was send to the wrong bank account on January 4th, and there’s no sign of the bank sending it back, on the contrary, the irs website confirmed that the payment “was scheduled” and nothing new ever since. That’s why I wanted to make an amendment to my recovery rebate that I never had it. All of this was right before the second check which to me was scheduled in March 17th.

recovery rebate amendment

After calling the taxpayer advocate I was transferred about 3 times in between them, the IRS, and the economic impact line. As result they told me to make an amendment but I don't know exactly what to make. I was provided with the economic impact line to get instructions at [phone number removed], but I've tried this number multiple times in the last couple of months and they never put me on the line, which is why I wanna make the amendment on my own, since turbo-tax is not making amendments at all on the app. I have the 1040-x ready to amend, I just placed my general information in but did not fill up any of the deductions, tax-liability, payments etc. I'm just planning on explain on part III what the change was on the Recovery Rebate, and mail it with my latest 6 months bank statement as proof. Would this be enough? or will I need something else?

The IRS told you to amend? That seems counterintuitive since they said they are cross-checking and correcting. I like your idea to fill out the why you are amending line and adding the bank statements. Use short simple sentences to explain. You want this easy to understand. A mailed in amendment is going to be months, up to a year, to process at this point.

The taxpayer advocate was not able to help either. Your story is full of information. Good luck!
