You should wait to file amendment until refunded.

Turbotax allowed me to begin and nearly complete an amendment although the IRS suggests waiting for any refund before doing so. I had not received a refund and luckily asked the IRS website about when/how to file an amendment just before completion online due to the fact that there were taxes   the refund amount due to pay while having not yet received the refund to pay back with. I'd assumed TTax would see the refund not received yet and thus only ask the corrected amount due while notifying the IRS of the error before sending out any refund. It did not/does not distinguish.

This would be a helpful question to ask a user when they attempt to amend a return so they do not make a mistake or make the process more difficult.

"Did you/Have you received your refund? The IRS suggests waiting for any refund before amending your return as any refund error will be due to pay back immediately once we complete the amendment for filing."

TurboTax does not get any additional information about your return/refund once your returns are accepted.  The program has no idea if you received your original refund or if you return was processed.  TurboTax has also not idea if you received your return, the program will also show your refund amount until you do an amendment.

The IRS does state that you should not file an amened return until your original return has been fully processed (refund received or payment withdrawn).

@maestro2711  If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.”

If you used the CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending
