Question

Wrong automatic entry on the state withheld

I live in New York state but get W-2 income from Maryland. When I scan the W-2 for the federal tax, the turbo tax entered the state withheld as New York, rather than Maryland.

When I working on the state of Maryland in the Turbo Tax, I able to manually change the state withheld on the form 505 (nonresident), However, when I working on the New York State at the Turbo Tax I am not able to change the amount into zero. Please help. Thank you

You need to correct the w2 in the federal section to show MD as the state with taxes and income. Go back to federal income, edit your w2.  You should only show one line on your w2 for the state section, MD. The program will pull all income into NY automatically.

I work remotely from New York,  and my W2 is from Maryland. Box #15 should be NY or MD? and Box# 17 is belong to which state?

What state is in box 15 on the actual W2?  If you're not sure ask your employer.

Following you suggestions, I have remove the W-2 and manually enter the data.

Again after finish the federal, it says on the state return, recommended states: Maryland and New York

Since the W2 was corrected for 2022 to show New York as the state that you reside and work in you do not have to file a Maryland tax return anymore.  For 2022 do not fill out or file a Maryland return.  Maryland does not tax remote workers not doing any work in Maryland.

You will file a New York resident return and pay taxes to New York.  The withholding for New York should take care of that.

The system wants you to file a Maryland return because when you entered your personal information it asked you if you performed any work in a state other than New York and you said yes and entered Maryland.  Go back and change that to 'No'.

You do not need to amend any returns.  You sorted out the withholding in prior years by getting it back from Maryland and paying taxes to New York.  Now you don't have to do that anymore which is good.  But you already fixed the prior years.  Leave them alone.
