When starting my amendment, the top left that should say "0" is not and I have changed nothing. I wanted to do was add my 1098-T school expenses. What do I do?

No, that is correct. When you prepare an amendment, the refund monitor will always reset to zero. When you add your expenses, the refund monitor will change showing a refund for changing your return to reflect your school expenses that wasn't reported originally.
