Returns Rejected By IRS

Our return was rejected by the IRS due to what appeared to be duplicate 1099R entries. My wife and I had identical Roth accounts that we withdrew at the same time so the 1099Rs were the same and were in fact correct entries. The Roth distributions were not taxable. What is the best way to get our return accepted? I have considered combining the 2 1099Rs and reporting one amount since there is no tax impact, but I prefer not to do this.

There's any number of ways to make the 1099-Rs that are being treadted as duplicate different.
For one of the 1099-Rs:

  • enter a date in Box 13
  • enter an account number
  • change the zip code in the payers address to point to some other city.
  • enter an amount in box 8
  • enter an amount in box 17 or 19

Thank you very much for the reply. What actually worked was simply rounding up one of the 1099s by $1.00 even though it was not necessary ($.14 to $1.00). I appreciate the suggestions.
