Refund changed after filing and acceptance (no unemployment)

I filed my taxes on 1/20/21 using TurboTax Premier. On 2/17/21, I received notice that my return was rejected. Following TurboTax’s advice, I updated the software and resubmitted my return. On 2/17/21, I received a notice that my return was accepted. My return showed a refund. Today, I checked the status using TurboTax. The program once again updated , and now shows a different, higher refund.  I have received no notification from either TurboTax or the IRS. How is this handled? What refund will I get?

I do not have any unemployment income.

You return was filed before the legislative changes were made.   Due to the changes, you are no longer required to pay back the Advanced Premium Tax Credit.   The IRS is manually processing returns that included these paybacks to remove them.   You don't need to file the amendment for the changes as the IRS is going to handle issuing these additional refunds.

Keep checking the Where's My Refund page to check the processing of your return.    When searching, use the amounts from your originally filed return.

The IRS issues refunds, not TurboTax. This means that we can't say for sure why you haven’t received your refund if it's been longer than 21 days since you e-filed.  You'll have to speak directly to IRS to find out more about the delay.   You should be receiving your refund and/or a notice from the IRS soon.

Unfortunately, since this is a public forum, it's hard to see exactly what happened.

I would recommend reviewing the copy of your return you filed to what is currently reflected in TurboTax to determine where the differences are.

In TurboTax, you can view your tax summary for your 2020 tax return by doing the following:

  1. Go into the black panel on the left and select Tax Tools
  2. Then select Tools beneath Tax Tools.
  3. A "Tools Center" box will pop up, select "View Tax Summary"
  4. You will see a screen that gives a snapshot of your taxes based upon your input so far.
  5. Click on the black panel on the left bar and select Preview my 1040
  6. This will allow you to review your overall line items on your federal tax return.  Compare these amounts to your actual tax return filed to help you determine why there is such a large difference

After you review the above items, simply select "Back" in the black panel to get back to the interview forms.

The difference is on 1040SR line 17 which comes from schedule 2 line 3. After the most recent update, Schedule 2 line 2 isn't picking up line 29 from form 8962. It did pick up line 29 from form 8962 in the version I filed, which I assume is correct. It seems the recent update has a bug, and my original return was correct.

So the question becomes - Why haven't I received my refund after 10 weeks?
