Owing money on 2021 amended return.

I filed my 2021 1040 and owed 13,000. I authorized the IRS to debit my checking account.  Then I found an error and filed a 1040-X which showed I actually owe 8,000.  How will the IRS handle this without me sending an additional 8,000?

An amended return is processed separate from your original return.  The IRS will deduct the amount from your original return.  You can either let them take out the money & then when they process your amended return, the IRS would send you a check for the overpayment.

Or, you can cancel the original direct debit, then just pay the amount that your Amended return shows.

Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling. Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

You can send in the payment in the amount stated by your amended return with a payment voucher (1040-V) or you can pay the amount in the IRS website.  See the following

Please clarify.

If your amended return shows a tax due of $8,000, it means that you owe an additional $8,000 on top of the first $13,000.

If you say that your tax due after amending is $8,000, then your amended return should show a refund of $5,000.

Owing money on 2021 amended return.

Oh, I happened to just see your comment and it seems to fit what's happening to me currently, so if you don't mind me asking:

(I have $91 in Federal income tax withheld)

On my original tax return I had forgotten to mark down that someone could/is going to claim me as a dependent. Originally it said I was going to receive $1491 on the return, although a few days later I remembered about my parent claiming me on their return. So I amended my original return and it had said I owe $1400 now. The $1400 was just withdrawn from my bank acc. though I never received the original $1491.

So my question is: Will I receive a deposit for the $1491, since originally they overpaid? Or is there something more I need to do?

Thanks

@jakeythesnakey  Was your original return fully processed before you amended your return?  You should not amend a return until your original return has been fully processed (refund received or taxes owed were withdrawn. It is unusual for an amended return to be processed before your original return.  The IRS may have already corrected your original return and adjusted the amount.  You might only receive the $91 since you owed $1,400 with your amended return.

No one here would know what the IRS has changed or what you will receive.  You can check the IRS websites for information on your return/refund.
