The IRS sent many of its employees home for about two months due to the pandemic----during that time, tasks that had to be performed by a human in the office were left behind, and the clock stopped ticking on the time it would take for them.  They are back now, so you should start watching the IRS refund site for information.  And, no, TurboTax cannot speed them up for you, even if you upgrade.  Once your return has been filed, TurboTax receives no information from the IRS nor can TT act on your behalf with the IRS.    Sorry.

IRS phone lines supported by customer service representatives for both taxpayers and tax professionals are not staffed at this time. To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

9021– Reference Code for all math error conditions.

Note that a "math error" can occur if you make a data entry mistake, or forget to claim some income; and thus the refund amount is incorrectly calculated..  The IRS will be sending you a letter. They do not notify TT.

I received a notice with the code 9021.

After filing taxes for my second stimulus money. The irs site says someone else has claimed me and received my "2nd" stimulus money $600. But I feel that its something to do with this turbo tax card, because when the 2nd stimulus came my card said it had been deposited to my card but the card had returned it to the irs and I can't find out why. Iv called the card and the irs and cant speak with a live operator with either one.  I'm furious with this stupid card and the irs!!! No one else can or has claimed me or they wouldnt have deposited it on my card to beging with.

Also my card says I owe $9.90 for over due charges, you'd think theyd taken that out of the $600 before theyd ever returned it to the irs but there's nothing wrong with my card so idk why this has happened. I got my first stimulus check on it with no problems at all.

If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Right now all I can do is wait until the irs sends me the letter on March 08, explaining why I haven't received my money.

If you are eligible, you will get the stimulus payments. Only deal directly with the IRS. They can be reached at 1-800-829-1040. Monday - Friday 7 AM - 7 PM.

For more information, see: Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions | Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has stated that the stimulus payments can only be garnished for back child support.

The TurboTax article link for the Recovery Rebate Credit, regarding eligibility states you

  • Must be owed an additional amount based on the information in this year’s 2020 Tax Filing. The maximum amounts are:
    • First payment: $1,200 ($2,400 if married filing jointly for 2020) plus $500 for each qualifying child you had in 2020; and
    • Second payment: $600 ($1,200 if married filing jointly for 2020) plus $600 for each qualifying child you had in 2020
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien,
  • Have a valid Social Security number, and
  • You can’t have been claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2020 tax return

In general, taxpayers without an eligible Social Security number are not eligible for the credit. However, married taxpayers filing jointly where one spouse has a Social Security number and one spouse does not, are eligible.

There are also AGI limits to receive the full amount of the credit. Your adjusted gross income (AGI) must be below,

  • $75,000 for individuals
  • $112,500 for heads of household
  • $150,000 for married, joint filers

For filers with income above those amounts, the credit amount is reduced by $5 for each $100 above the $75,000/$112,500/$150,000 thresholds. This means:

  • An individual without children will not receive any credit if their AGI exceeds $87,000
  • A couple without children will not receive any credit if their AGI exceeds $174,000
  • A family of four will not receive any credit if their AGI exceeds $198,000

They kept mine for back taxes. Recovery rebate credit is garnished not protected like the stimulus check was. I am on disability 12k a year filed for both stimulus checks that I didn't receive and they kept all of it for a 1765.00 tax debt. This is just wrong on every level.

I am a few days away from commiting suicide over the IRS and SSA. I lost ALL of my income after my Dr couldn't get into his office to sign important paperwork after Covid..I have lived on $100 a month!! From 3k to $100. I was so relieved to think I could file my taxes to get what everyone ELSE gets. I worked hard all my life. Now disabled, they are so screwed up, they keep telling me my stimulus was sent to my bank..(closed 2 YEARS AGO!!!) I never dreamed in my life I would be reduced to nothing...I can't even make my own bread because I can't afford flour. yes, I have had it..

I am sorry for all your are going through. If your payment can’t be delivered to you for any reason, it should be returned to the IRS. This often happens when a payment gets sent to the wrong bank account. Once your bank sends back the payment, you will be able to get your payment reissued.

To get your payment reissued, the IRS gives the following guidance:

  • Set up direct deposit with Get My Payment. After your payment is returned to the IRS, your payment status will update to “Need More Information.” You can then choose direct deposit to a:
    • Bank account
    • Prepaid debit card (must be reloadable; contact the card issuer for information)
    • Alternative financial products that have a routing and account number associated with them
  • Update your address with the IRS. The easiest way is to file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you haven’t already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.

Please reach out to us if you have any further problems receiving your stimulus.

Yeah I found out about all I need to know the first stimulus check bacon take for garnishment child support tax debt and such the second check was protected under a bill that passed so you got it and if you didn't get either impound for the rebate credit I in the tax form it change from stimulus 2 rebate credit which I thought was the same thing but you then it is split and have a Nifty little answer that the stimulus is in advance in the credit is whatever I guess they wanted to be or whatever you live for is theirs they snatch it up and they know what's going on in there working that and nothing probably will ever be done on anybody's behalf it's like having a big bag of cocaine and writing sugar on it so now it's not cocaine at all tell that to the judge see how that works quite a predicament

I have the same exact code. They told me that it was because  I put standard deduction, and had no income.. I had to pick one I just don't understand! This is so unfair, I have not received one stimulus credit since this all happened last year. The irs rep, I dont think had a clue in what she's talking about.

You're correct,  There has been some difficulty in understanding and accessing IRS tools and information regarding the stimulus payments.  Please review the new FAQs in the article, How will the third stimulus impact me?

Here is a TurboTax article about the American Rescue Plan.

Here is a link to the TurboTax portal to enter direct deposit info for stimulus check.

Just got my refund of 298... Not 1498 as the software led me to believe and actually filed.

TurboTax let me down. I will be deleting my account and using something else moving forward.

Shame on you TT

That sounds like a possible stimulus check mix up.  Some people were confused by the recovery rebate credit and entered incorrect amounts which made their refunds look bigger.

Did you enter  ALL of the stimulus money that you had already received correctly in the recovery rebate credit section when you prepared your 2020 return?  The IRS cross checks and if you did not enter all of the money you received, they recalculate your refund.

MY REFUND WAS LESS THAN I EXPECTED

There can be a number of reasons why your refund was less than the amount you expected. First of all, look carefully at your actual tax returns.  There is sometimes confusion about the amount of refund to expect when users misinterpret the “summary” they saw in TurboTax. The amount of your refund is on your tax return.  Federal refund is on line 34 on Form 1040  State tax forms are all different so we cannot tell you what line to look at on your state form.  BUT it is important to actually LOOK at your tax return forms yourself and see the amounts of your tax refunds and/or tax due.  A lot of confusion would be avoided by doing that.

TurboTax does not receive feedback from the IRS regarding money that was offset from your refund.  If you owed back taxes, child support, student loan debt, etc. you will receive a letter of explanation from the IRS in several weeks.  The WMR site will contain a message regarding your offset.  It is also possible that the IRS caught a mistake you made and reduced your refund.

A possible reason for the reduction could be that the recovery rebate credit was completed incorrectly and you may have entered the amount of stimulus already received wrong, which could have reduced the refund you thought you were seeing.

It is also possible that your state reduced your refund for debts owed in your state—if the state reduced your state refund you will receive a letter from the state.

Be aware also that your Federal refund and state refund do NOT come together.  Federal and state tax returns are processed by two completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come first,

Did you choose to have TT fees deducted from your Federal refund?  (Remember that if you did that, you also agreed to an extra refund processing fee of $39.99)
