If your return got rejected for whatever reasons, you can return to the program/account to make corrections along with other changes. You do not need an amendment 1040-X.

No, if you have already filed your return and need to amend it, you do not need to also file an extension. The extension is for people who have not already filed their return by 04/15 and need more time to complete their return. However, any taxes they may owe must be paid by 4/15.
