Whatever you filed originally, is considered your original return. Once it is accepted and the finances are settled, then you would file an amended return to correct any information. An amended return will replace the original return.
Whoever claims you, claims the education credit. If you filed the 1098T on your forms and claimed yourself, your parents will find the IRS removing all the credits from theirs or sending you all letters.
Depending on the timing, this could be a long process to get resolved correctly. You need to:
- Tell your parents the whole story
- Once everything is settled, one or both parties may need to amend. Yes, you can amend again but ONLY when everything is settled from the first two filings.
