On the consumer side, the QMID requirement changes how you shop. It is no longer enough to ask whether a window is efficient; you now need to confirm that the manufacturer has assigned a qualified product identification number and that this number will appear on your documentation - Invoice or other documentation received from the contractor. Guidance aimed at homeowners notes that starting in 2025, the Internal Revenue Service is implementing new identification rules for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit, and that you will need the manufacturer’s code in order to claim the credit. That means you should ask your contractor or supplier to provide the exact model numbers and the associated identifier in writing before installation.
The QMID may not be on the windows. So call the contractor if you cannot locate it.
Hi @char9324 & @Mike9241 --We're investigating the program repeating the QMID error message when the format is correct. If this sounds related to what you're describing, reply back to this message and I'll make sure you get email updates for when this is resolved.
QMID error when properly formatted seems to occur for numerous users.
These people don't live in the real world, none of that is on a invoice. What a waste of time for $600?
We went through all the trouble of contacting the manufacturer of our new windows to get the QMID and then discovered the IRS has qualified manufacturers and ours was not one of them. Per the IRS, " A qualified manufacturer for Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credits must meet all the requirements under IRC 25C(h)(3). The manufacturer must also be entered into a written agreement with the IRS."
